Centennial changes in water clarity of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea

چکیده
Secchi depth is a valuable proxy for detecting long term changes in the water clarity of oceanic and coastal ecosystems. We analyse approximately 40 000 observations, which are available from ICES, from the Baltic Sea and the North Sea in the 20th century. Our results suggest pronounced effects of bottom depth and distance to coast on Secchi depth, and we account for this topographical effect in an assessment of the long term change in water clarity. Our results suggest a centennial Secchi depth shoaling of 3.2 0.2 and 5.8 0.6 m in areas that are shallower and deeper than 100 m in the Baltic Sea. For the North Sea the corresponding numbers were 1.8 0.3 and 5.2 0.9 m. We discuss potential ecosystem effects involving pronounced reductions in photic habitats and reduced visibility for visual predators. We suggest that the role of long term variations in colour dissolved organic matter (CDOM) on the transparency in the Baltic Sea and North Sea deserves future attention. 2013 The Authors. Progress in physical oceanography of the Baltic Sea during the 2003–2014 period
We review progress in Baltic Sea physical oceanography (including sea ice and atmosphere–land interactions) and Baltic Sea modelling, focusing on research related to BALTEX Phase II and other relevant work during the 2003–2014 period. The major advances achieved in this period are: Meteorological databases are now available to the research community, partly as station data, with a growing numbe...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Variations of the 90Sr in the Southern Part of the Baltic Sea over the Period of 2005–2010
The Baltic Sea is one of the most contaminated seas by the radioactive isotope of strontium in the world; therefore the activity of ⁹⁰Sr is regularly controlled. Due to that fact, seawater samples for ⁹⁰Sr determination were collected at 16 stations located in the southern Baltic Sea between 2005 and 2010. In this period average activity of ⁹⁰Sr was 7.8 Bq m⁻³ and varied within the range from 3...
متن کاملModelling sea level variability in different climates of the Baltic Sea
Within the Baltic Sea Region INTERREG IIIB project `Sea level change affecting the spatial development in the Baltic Sea region' (SEAREG, 2002-2005) sea levels in past and future climate were investigated based upon 6-hourly regional model results. The main factors affecting the longterm mean sea level in the Baltic Sea are the land-uplift, the eustatic sea level rise, and the water balance of ...
متن کاملBiomonitoring of trace metal bioavailability in the barnacle Amphibalanus improvisus along the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea
The fouling barnacle Amphibalanus improvisus is a cosmopolitan biomonitor of trace metal bioavailability in coastal waters of reduced salinity such as estuaries or the Baltic Sea. Bioavailability of Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn to A. improvisus was investigated in July 2014 at 15 sites along the Iranian coast of the understudied, yet biologically unique, Caspian Sea. In gene...
